Archetypes
The Archetypes series reinterprets turn-of-the-century photographs of women of color, highlighting the cultural biases in historical records. Photography has portrayed women through objectification and categorization, serving social constructs for nationhood and identity; this work intends to change the narrative and the gaze through a female approach, challenging traditional notions of identification and portrayal of women, presenting an inescapable portrait whose gaze dared the act to be more than a record. Although the portrait may originate from different images, they intend to identify every woman witnessing, questioning the difference between the eye we control and the one that observes without consent and reflecting on today's continuing disallowance of women's gender-defining identity.
